try making the body thinner and the arms more visible. As it is now it seems a rotten wurstel xD

maybe this image is bad but DarkWatter's image is very nice just need to make it more scary.

Shading is obtained by making a unit part darker or lighter based on the 3d effect ou want to obtaine.
For example if you want do make a tree you can't just draw it and color it with a plain brown color, but you'll make the sides of a darker color and the inner art of a lighter color (since that part is the one closer to the observer), given a frontal light source.
Make darker the parts that are more "hidden" and lighter those that are in foreground

32x32 (1x1 unit e.g foot soldiers)
64x64 (2x2 e.g castle)
32x64 (1x2 e.g mounted units, giants)
64x32 (2x1 e.g structure factory barracks, archery) (2 structure in one size image 64 ÷ 2 = 32 (32 size of each)
OR 32x32 Each Image just make the another image.
exmple of 64x32 or 32x32 structure
(just choose one method for your alternative way)

The image became a bit to bold. The outline was ok but you just need to shade the color

You haven't to make the shading like a shadow. Just the xolor of the unit must vary INSIDE the unit shape
