Tanegashima Ashigaru - ANSWERED

I think the Tanegashima Ashigaru units should require the Gunpowder tech.

As it is now, you can build them in a Castle without researching Gunpowder. This doesn't make sense: Don't they use guns with gunpowder?

I agree. They should need the gunpowder tech.

maybe, but the idea was:
- there are units that needs upgrades and can be upgraded (general units) - catapult, swordsman, knight and so on.
- and there are "special" hired or mercenary like units, they are more costy but they have their default "extra" skills/equipment - hoplite, roman leginarie, tanegashima, and so on.
- the special unit can not be upgraded
- however the special units have some "fixed" extra abilities by default.

so at this approach i think he will not need gunpowder.

however if you menioning this gunpowder tech for ashigaru because of balancing reasons (so not in theoretical approach) than i suggest modifying stats to make it balanced.

(ps: i am not strict at the question.)

Okay that sounds fine, Daniel. I did not realize that there was a reason to not require Gunpowder for them, but that makes sense.

No there were no reasons other than the theoretical - the stats are fine I think.

Why don't we add the Yari Ashigaru as the castle basic unit and make the tanegashima ashigaru appear once you researched gunpowder?
It is true that ashigaru are some sort of special units, but, after all, you need balistic to produce trebuchets so it could make sense.
However we might also decide to make some room to range upgrades for gunpowder units
