New structure - Tunnels.
Workers can create 1 tunnel(with capacity of 4 units at a time) per map/game. Worker would build 2 tunnel entrances(cost 3 each) anywhere on the map, allowing all grounded (including seige equipment) units to transport through the tunnel over the time of 2 turns (regardless of set unit pace). Destruction of a tunnel entrance by the enemy would either force the occupants back out the remaining entrance or destroy them altogether.
I believe this would make elephants more effective and worthwhile.

Too modern mate, the terrorits/rebels used tunnels to prevent being hit by airstrikes and long range missles. Putting an Elephant in a tunnel is like threading the needle. Woah man seriously, in medieval times they are a technique in destroying thick walls and not for transporting siege equipment. Also complicated coding will require this and also tunnel animation for tunneled units.

It might but this thing is very much complex: to decide which units to allow, how it will look so that the user can see his units passing through but not the opponents, not to allow tunnels to be built across water etc

I think it is a good idea if it has a radius limit (how far the tunnels are) and only infantry can enter (and maybe small siege works if we ever implement any). But I think the tunnel would be a pain for Daniel to have to code.

Maybe you could create a tunnel like structure that a worker can build into/through a mountain. Or other terrain that's only passable by going around. Say foot soldier and wagon could pass through but would deny entry to catapults and battering rams. Instead Maybe only units on foot or in wagon can pass through the tunnel. 2 turns to make the tunnel. Per tile. Tunnels can be destroyed by using catapults and other heavy weapons. Cannons and such. No under water tunnels and tunnels cannot be made bigger than 2 tiles side by side. Giving room for possible transportation of wagon carried units. Elephants and trebuchets and Horse units should not be allowed access through tunnel. Unless in wagon. For image of tunnel in general maybe do a dark Brown tile for mud and what not with 2 small pillars on each side allowing foot soldiers and wagons to pass through. Pillars expand if tunnel gets a second tile. Say 10 tiles long 2 tiles wide tops. Can create a seperate New tunnel but must be another 3 tiles away to ensure that the tunnel is not Too Big. Tunnel cannot be created unless through mountain or similar obstacle. Tunnels cannot be repaired and if a tile has a tunnel and the tunnel is destroyed that tile becomes a ruin. Unable to rebuild the bridge or reuse the tile for a different purpose.

maybe there would be less coding if there is no tunnel but simply that the engineer can dig rock back to normal ground or dig a hole in the opponents wall and be seen in a visible way...

May b tunnels can have stealth? But nothing a dog with a sharp nose wouldn't spot, cannot b built on water but can built on mountain and cliff

-walkable normal speed
Hides unit inside - from enemy only?
Unit can not attack from inside
Carry 1/tile
Burnable?
(If want we can add an Advanement what adds +1capacity and ability to can b buildt "under water".
Though best as separate structure for inginere only.
2.after gunpowder research - we may add a dynamite tech - if isn't too modern what creates instant tunnel - damages units nearby - with CD)

Buildable tunnels
Tunnels can be used for a fast passageway and can only be built by a miner in a mountain,boulder etc.

If image would be ready - it could be added as an option to go through hills terrain (mountains, stacked stones), but I don't see the possibility to use it anywhere else without engine changes.
