Star Fort/Bastion Fort (Upgrade of High Castle)

Post by MaharajaInfernape »

During late 15th century, cannons evolved to be much more powerful than even those 3 decades before. A cannon could easily break the walls of a mediaeval castle and so castle lost their value. But in the 16th century star/bastion forts came into existence, which could withstand the strong shots of cannon.

I suggest Star Fort as an upgrade of High Castle to reflect the decline of mediaeval castles in this time. The Pierce Armour is lowered because star forts had lower walls, which may help arrows get inside them (though overall effect was negligible). The only main advantage of Star Fort over High Castle is that cannons have much less bonus on it. Following the decline of arrows, it is equipped with cannons instead of fire arrows (shooting 2x instead of 3x per turn because cannons are slower than arrows).

There is a little rule to upgrades - no single stat can be lowered.

Also there is probably no case (or very, very rare) when castles were really replaced.
Various forts were build in addition or when rebuilding was commenced.
But I get what you intended - to see those instead of regular castles as mega production facilities.

I think we should rather follow archers example and make the end of the game introduce new units, but not yet make older obsolete.
In such thinking it could be new building having similar functions, but not an upgrade.

A similar structure could be the upgrade of the fort, whereby the implementation of the upgrade would result from self-research by the fort, like castle/high-castle. The fort would produce no other units/techs aside from some sort of garrison unit, by summon or otherwise.
