It's not about teamcoloring path, but those semi-transparent tile overlaying squares.
They show for both controlled or ally/enemy units.

you mean all?

not sure good idea as that must be visible on all terrains - and current white already questionable as not well visible on snow.
or is it?

I think some player colored borderline on those semitranspartent squares will be best variant along with option 2 (color can be pink or white for dots and triangles).

This player colored borderline will be visible in almost all cases (maybe only john controlled neutrals on snow won'r be visible well but all other variants due to borderline can be visible pretty well).

Well borderline itself can be not that good visible in 5 cases:
1. Green controlled unit on grass (but square itself is visible still so this is fine);
2. Yellow controlled unit on sand (but again square itself is visible);
3. Blue/cyan controlled unit on water (again square itself is visible);
4. Red controlled unit on lava (again square itself is visible);
5. Neutral gray controlled unit on snow (and here square itself is also hard to notice which is problem).

This also can be solved via making this borderline more dark compares to square and/or less transparent.
