Death animation

It would be great if there was a dying animation for the troops
EXAMPLE:when units die they have an animation (infantry falls, tanks burnout, ships explode)

Based on what ive seen on forum posts about animations in general it seems they would be taxing on the engine itself or may be considered to cluttered for the simplistic vibe the game has(i could be wrong though)

we can not make it individually in all about 1000 units with animation every unit sprite.
however this can be solved like this:

but this will not look like the infanrty animates to death, or the tank parts are moving here and there, but an over animation,
eg. on tanks:
- they can have an explosion on them
- a few "holes" appearing on them on fixed locations on all tanks
- and some smoke-black parts
for a few milliseconds before they vanish.
