AOW tournament

Post by Jasondunkel » Sat Feb 13, 2021 11:18 am

what do you think about a 1vs1 and 2vs2 tournament?
in 2vs2 i would want to put the teams together randomly.
i.e. i would write down all the names and then draw lots.

if there is interest it would be nice to inform people who are not in the forum if they want to take part in something like this.

I would suggest a maximum of three slaughters.

maps should be determined beforehand

I would suggest a maximum time of 48 hours to make your move. after that the other player can skip the round without any ifs and buts. 48 hours is really long.

for 1vs1 i would want to reject the following cards

no retreat, italy, world map.

for the 2vs2 i suggest the maps: lake side, grate lake and battle for europe

who is interested should please write for which variant

other ideas are welcome

I think you need to think this through first.

Like some rules of course.

Like for balance, we should only be able to play on fixed tc maps.

We should be able to protest about a game with unfair tc advantage.

Should be able to stop it if it's deemed as so.

If the enemy gained an unfair advantage in the start of the game.

France use should be illegal to prevent players.from mistaking that as playable race. Theyre still weak after all and lack many types of unit.

And many more that I might have not known

Rewards should be nice too.

I'm not sure of what would be the rewards. Maybe hundreds of golds? Not sure... :?
But this will be a neat way of keeping the tournaments alive again, there had been no tournaments for more than a year.

if there are to be prizes, i'm out. stratego will have to say whether he's donating something. for myself, it would just be fun for the joy of it.

first of all it is here to see who and if there is any interest in a tournament.

I've already drawn up a few rules, but they're not ready yet.

but that's what we are here for, to work it out.

because of unfair tc distribution i have rejected the maps italy and world map because actually the tc distribution is always unfair.

We should be able to protest a game with unfair tc advantage.

We should be able to stop it if it is perceived to be so.

If the opponent has gained an unfair advantage at the beginning of the game.

HOW SHOULD THAT BE DONE?

But what if we create maps only for tournaments?

focusing in making these maps the most symmetrical and fair as possible?

and the theme of these maps can vary wildly... like in the moon or in the arctic

But in the reward side of thing... maybe we can give the oportunity to the winner to choose what reward he wants... ranging from simple gold to unique skins (made only for the tournement in question) or even making a unique unit made only for him (like a fun unit that can be whatever he wants)

We could also do this if we could find people to make these maps.
I at least would be open to it
The smallest unit of the maps should be at least 20x20 for the 1vs1 games.

for 2vs2 games the maps should be at least 30x30

here too, suggestions are still welcome

I wanna join...Thanks but which nations are we going to play?

German > America (In tanks, mobile arty and airpower)

America > UK (Late airforce units greater than spitfire)

UK > Russia (One Spitfire = 3 yak fighter)

Russian > Japan (Russian airforce superior compared to Japan's terrible bombers and fighter planes)

Japan > France (France no special buildings)

Wait, I don't agree with this at all.

German is stronger than US? No! Don't underestimate the US pls. In terms of navy yes. Well, I think every navy is weaker than Germany now after all. Still hate that unbalanced Sub. But in terms of play style, they're basically equal if both players are equally good.

US beat UK, totally not. Uk is more powerful from start to finish. Their basically equal to germany, not in naval though. I mean, that's germans you know, their navy is unparalleled.

Uk>Rus yes I agree. When they are first introduced, I was like. Is this made to counter russia?

Russia>Japan? No, not at all. Superior airforce? Yes, but JP has good support unlike the trash AA of russia.

Japan>France? Oh no, dude. France is actually better. France not having jetfighter is the biggest flaw though.

TNT
nice to see you here.

drejade suggested leaving the french out of the game. otherwise it would be up to you which nation you want to play with. e.g. telling banzi to play something different from japan... he would definitely not join in.

Fine, you convinced me, I hardly play other fraction so I guess I am a tiny bit bias...

If only this factional issues could be conveniently solved by like adjusting unit prices...

Hehe, who am I kidding, let's be honest, I am just trying to promote my envisioned 'best turn based game' via fixing the only aspect about AOW that still bugs me.

Unit turns.

(The last one was about antitank guns if you recall but that was actually implemented... And I still don't really use anti tank guns.. :)

Imagine playing an inferior nation (airforce) in which the opposition has greater points (towns) than you.

There is almost no way to win unless the other player is crap 1v1, just is contradictory if they got the initial advantage. (Or luck I suppose)

To overwhelm the opposition, you need greater air force to match, note not beat cause in a war of attrition you will gradually deplete units.

You need a good defensive line against bombers, cause attacking bomber with your fighter planes is fine, but one more loss (in a situation where the enemy lines are outside your base and any aircraft operating outside your lines would be shot at) in your airforce means another enemy fighter oneshoting your next aircraft. (Personal experiences with Russian yak fighter... It's "special" ability missile to air can't hit BF100C because that is a "fighter plane" which can conveniently one shot buildings I might add)

[And air to missile works against junkers bomber, except it only deals 40 damage, leaving the bomber at 1 hp.]

Continuing on, in order to protect your defensive line, you need land units.

To which each has to take down twice the number of enemies itself in order to achieve equal attrition with the enemy front-lines.

Which leads you open to enemy armour, because the best way to deal with armour is bombers, but if you don't have enough resources for a bomber, and if you do, it's a trade for a 7-8 turn bomber for a pyrrhic land victory in which you hold your line.

Enough babbling, the main point. I reason that the best solution to factional imbalance is unit production costs.

By introducing unit production costs, we can avoid enemy spamming of largely almost uncountedable units like battleships.

This would make Russia great again (cause their stereotypically nature is cheap production esp for units and tanks)

This would make the game longer (hopefully not too long) and give Japan a better fighting chance once the enemies rate of spamming superior units (e.g P-thunderbolt or perishing star)

Hence in my conclusion, the game would be more enjoyable and strategically engaging.

How it could work?

-towns produce a certain amount of resources each turn.
-Resources can comprise of cash, steel, oil and components(?)

-units destroying other units may give scrap amounts of resources.

-Perhaps we can make it that each town is specialised in a particular resource, making strategic locations more important.

Anyhow, what your thoughts on this idea. Please don't just only say post it up somewhere, honestly too lazy too but because I was here, I might as well dump it all here.

Sorry for wasting anyone's turn, I mean time.

I'm in. The planes are being fueled, the tanks are being prepared, the infantry is training, the ships are in port preparing for combat, and the factories have lit their furnaces.
