If we go for a set of icons, I was thinking of design for AoS to be symbols of:
- exploration (ground)
- sea map (or sea exploration)
- skirmish
- open field battle
- siege
- other/mystery

Light cavalry
Water transport

Hoplite
Catapult
Priest

Maybe?

I was thinking of more symbolic approach:
- telescope
- indistinguishable ship
- bow and arrow
- pretty similar to current one - crossed swords (maybe with shield)
- wall with ladder on it or maybe siege tower (symbolic, not in-game unit image)
- closed eye maybe

Maybe as a new option? We have right now "create random map" and "create skirmish map".
We can add 3rd option "create campain background map" and place in map editor unique for that variant points to use (for campains).

I am bad at drawing. I am not able to create background image on my own from scrap. Only via such external programms — map editor and second one.
good news, i made that you can drag the maps icons anywhere and from that you can get the "coordinate list" easily.
is that good?

now we only need the many many background images and we can start positioning the maps on them lol :)

we have these many campaigns just in AOS
