Purpose of Achievements

What is the purpose of Achievements in the games? Do they give gems to the player when they are accomplished, or are they connected to the Google Play Games account of the player?

About the Google Play Games, there is an option to remind players in multiplayer games through the Google Play account which isn't possible currently. I hope that this issue could be fixed.

It would be more rewarding if achievements gives some rewards to the player upon completion. Like gems for example.
