I also have idea of powerful spells for units that you can use only one per cooldown of all spells (aka spellbook, one cooldown for all spells of unit) and this needs similar mechanic.
How these "crystals" are supposdd to work:
So what do we need is next:1. You research crystal tech.
2. You use crystal ability on unit, ability receives loooong (200+ turns) cooldown.
3. You move unit to tower.
4. Tower reactivates ability on unit (forcibly sets cooldown on all abilities to 0).
5. Repeat from №2.
Ability that forcibly sets cooldown on all abilities to target number regardless of current cooldowns (or no cooldowns).
Even abilities without cooldowns.
Ofc that number can be 3 (turns), 500, 7 or 0 (instantly resets cooldowns).
