The Map Savers Collective

Post by phoenixffyrnig »

Nice one @AOSGod and @Harchie Hirondo - I knew I wasn't alone in loving these classics.

Let's use this space to co-ordinate our efforts.

I'm doing Greenfields and (hopefully) Abandoned City more or less as they are, and I want to do "cover versions" of Forgotten Land and Mega Quad Arena with a few tweaks to favour attacking.

Harchie, you mentioned world map, do you mean the map of the World or the "real world" maps in general?

AOSGod - I got drunk after we spoke last night.
:D What were you doing again?
I also play an RTS game called Life 8-)
And I also like drinking beer! :D

@makazuwr32 Hey Mak, saw your post in another topic. There's a few of us really like those old maps. You cool to let us know what you are currently/imminently working on? Between us we should be able to save all the favourite ones :)

In AoF i will work on maps later, on next week, thus for now i am not working on any map yet.

Hold your horses everyone.
I'm thinking I can save them all.

Although it is still not finished, I have been writing a program to automatically generate .map files from .tmx files (or adding missing data in case of around 1/3 maps, that had .map overlay).
It's already doing most of what it is supposed to do.
There is still most hateful part before me - testing and fixing anything that was potentially missed, but I am quite sure it's doable and on it's good way.

Can you do this for aof tmx maps as well?

I haven't checked, but tmx is tmx - it's just xml styled file with packed data of map layers, so it should work.
The only variable I can think of are unitType translations and potentially code added details, but I think stratego will help with that.

Little update:
Program already works (if you followed release info some maps are even public).
All elements seems to be translated correctly.
There is however a setback - old tiles.
They need to be replaced.
Most replacements is already defined - it's work in progress.

Good stuff Endru. So what does that mean, they will all be coming back, it is just a matter of time?

I've been playing around with a couple of them to learn the Map Editor process - I just had to make sure Greenfields was definitely safe! - is there a way of getting permissions for larger than 50x50?
I also play an RTS game called Life 8-)
