Torpedo corvette IMPLEMENTED

A corvette class spaceship armed with torpedoes of some kind. Effective against big ship at a range, but ineffective against smaller space ships. More expensive, slower and easier to destroy than normal corvettes. Maybe built in a factory only?

All races should have a similar ship, some can have a frigate class instead of a corvette. This is the next logical step for the development of space battles, preventing cruiser spam from being the dominant strategy.

Are torpedoes a separate unit like an intercontinental missile launcher?

I think I'd rather not, we can do that for something with higher range.

These torpedoes should probably just be an attack with like range 3 or smt.

What's the difference? In my opinion, this is the replacement of cruising spam with corvettes spam. The best step would be to add some analogue of "cavalry" with high speeds and low cost, which would quickly destroy long-range ships, thereby forcing to make ships of other classes to protect cruisers.

Torpedo ships will have bonuses against cruisers, so if you spam cruiser this will be the counter.

Torpedo ships will be weak against other, smaller ships, so youd make those (mainly destroyers Id say) to protect your cruisers from torpedo ships.

Best units against those anti torpedo ships are the cruisers

This is a rock-paper-scissors type of system, similar to swordmen - knight - spearmen system from AoS that will force the players to build balanced armies, using all types of units, which is what Id strive for.
