In team matches, if an ally resigns or is kicked, and is then assimilated into your forces, it seems that any researches that you both share are combined and added together.
I am in a 2v2v2 where each pair has lost an ally. One of my opponents has missile units with +4 range and attack (presumably because both he and his ex-ally researched both levels of master archery and they stacked together), and I have inherited castles from my ex- comrade with 5062 hp (this equals the compound interest of 50% applied four times to the base hp of 1000 for castles - twice for both of us researching masonry, plus twice for both of us researching massive walls).
This game is currently ongoing, but it would appear so far that this double stacking only applies to the forces we have inherited, not to our own original forces.
