I use Hero knight(with different number, 1,2,3, and 4) as samples to test the ability of elephants.
The result is quite strange... Is it a bug?

One:1 H lost 6 hp. (Seems fit because H have 4 armor. 10-4 = 6hp )

Trample is just regular environmental effect with density 1, range 1. It should just call related damaging effect (special default), that passes unit abilityPower as multiplier for propertyChanger being applied on the end (-1hp, with bonuses, reducible by armor).
@Stratego (dev) this must be some sort of bug related to late changes.
