Ok, never mind, I guess considering the material they would just reflect the attacks with no harm to the wielder.

This effect (+5% dodge melee/ranged, 10% maxed) probably will be changed later if we will implement that upscaling of stats.
The reasons why we made last 2 tiers to give dodges are:
1. To avoid too high armors for dwarven units — 8/8 armor on normal swordman and 12/12 armor on shielder is overkill with current stats, especially against such races as elves or undeads;
2. We were thinking that these upgrades do not give dodge as "dodge" itself but as chance to fully block enemy's attack by shield.

Exactly, in that case dodge was more like a deflection.

I can't find were I mentioned this before, but the elite Merblin looter and master Merblin looter can't cross water.
