I always liked the idea but @makazuwr32 always pointed that this way walls would allow for free movement from one side and the other.

I think that he's right on that subject but I think we might turn around the problem with a few settings. We can set walls so that you can't move through them (maybe they could still be passable by either jumpers, flyers and friendly mountainwalkers though) but we should also make sure that a unit can enter inside them. This way the unit would actually loose a turn to go in and out a wall, so gates would still be useful and walls would still limit the mobility of defenders.
