As far as I know - they are not used. Just like few other units in the map editor (e.g. everything related to Asterix and Obelix).
It was supposed to be used for advancing (training) the hero. There is three paths of upgrades, but they all come into the perfect one in the end.
But there is no way to pass any variables from earlier maps, so it was left alone.
