WWII Navies - Destroyers OLD_TOPIC

I noticed there was no mention of the Navy, so I will start on the destroyers, since they were the "bread and butter" for naval operations.

I am no expert, but the way I understand it is: The German destroyers were considered bottom tier, and not necessarily for ocean going use. Their armament was too heavy and left them vulnerable to aircraft, and generally they performed under their rated speeds. The British destroyers were best at nothing but (jolly) good for just about anything. The Americans designed theirs mostly for use in the Pacific. They had dual purpose mounted weapons, and generally were fairly durable. The Japanese had superiority in that their torpedoes were unmatched until the end of the war.

I am starting design with the Americans and will add more later. Please comment and let me know if I have got some things wrong.

US: The 'Fletcher' class was by far the most numerous. They were begun to be replaced near the end of the war by the 'Sumner' class, which was leaner and had better guns. I include both, perhaps to be upgraded with a tech/upgrade. I am not 100% happy with these images; please tell me how I can better them.

That looks great! :)
I kinda had the idea to colorify according to nation, maybe. So it's easier to recognize (ie German=brown and UK=blue-ish). What do you think?

Are these to be the final images? I edited yours slightly, dust-n-steel. The Nation color is still green - I don't know if I have to change it. The Player color is up in the corner - maybe it should be smaller. If these are approved, I'll begin on the Japanese.

For Japanese destroyers: As I did additional research, I discovered that the Japanese had around a dozen active classes of destroyers. So I chose two classes that had the most action and I felt were best examples of Japanese navy - the Kagero class upgrade to the Yugumo class. Let me know of any ways I can improve these images or any other general comments. They have a light red with grey color.

Thank you! Maybe German next; unless you would rather edit from the present destroyers- you probably are more knowledgeable than I am on this subject. :)

I am giving the Germans one class of destroyers only. Forgive me for saying, but to my understanding the WWII era German destroyers were junk :) . The fact of their victory in Norway is an anomaly in Naval history, rivaled perhaps only by Dunkirk. There were quite a few more classes, but most were experimental with only a few ships actually produced. That kind of sums up the German Navy at that time. (Though I understand they were severely limited by the Treaty of Versailles and the London limitations.) Zerstorer 1936 A: I figure this to be about as standard example of a destroyer active.

I made two more classes of Japanese destroyers. This will make the upgrades a bit cheaper from stage to stage. Fubuki class - This will be put before Kagero class. They are considered the first modern destroyer. Weaker than the American Fletcher class (because they are older) but it is fairly cheap to upgrade to Kagero class. Matsu class - These are going to be the same level of upgrade as the Yugumo class, so you can choose. Matsu is faster than Yugumo and cheaper, but not as good weapons.

Here are three French destroyers. The first is the small destroyer (torpilleur); I give one only (based off of the L'Adroit class). They were not very seaworthy and a bit slow. The next two are large destroyers (contre-torpilleur) that are sometimes classified as light cruisers. They are the Chacal class upgraded to the Fantasque class. These were considered the "epitome" of super-destroyers.

The British will be given six classes of destroyers. Their evolution of destroyers was much more gradual and unbroken than any other nation's. These were used by all the Commonwealth nations, so for many nations it will just need to be recolored.

A Class, basic but poor AA and AS --> Tribal Class, better larger, had an emphasis on guns instead of torpedoes--> J Class, similar in size to Tribal, better AA

--> WEP (War Emergency Programme) almost a step down smaller but also still versatile.

Town Class: These were old wwi era American ships called 'four pipers'. They were dearly hated by all their users but filled a gap in the Royal Navy.

Battle Class: These were the British answer to the super destroyers like the French Fantasque and their German experimental counterparts.

For the USSR: Three normal classes - many were designed by the Italians, so there will be similarity. The Leningrad class : they were designed similarly to the contre torpilleurs of France. As the first major ships built by the Soviets they were long in the making, and finished in time for the Winter War.
Project 7U --> Project 30K more sea-worthy than the 7.

The USSR also obtained quite a few of the "Town" Class.

Italians: I had not planned to put in the Regia Marina at first, but they had such similar ships to the ones already made that it was not much extra effort. Navigatori - Large destroyers, these had a few flaws early on like reduced speed but modifications corrected them later on.
Maestrale class was mostly used as an escort --> Soldati class were the latest ships and improved on their older designs.
The Italian Navy was not horrible, but it received a bad reputation in North Africa; much like the army did in the Balkan affair.

Daniel: I really want a new version as soon as possible! But maybe we can wait until I do a few battleships so we have a few more to work with. Maybe, then Patroid and dust-n-steel will have some more infantry too.

I think I will stop with destroyers for a bit and maybe begin on battleships.

actually it was good pull to post in this (however postinhg in a 3yo topic seemed spam) because i see here many good images that we can use for further ship types in game.

UPDATE:sadly i see they are 32x32, they need to be transferred to 64px
